In a surprising turn of events, Tory Lanez has made headlines once again, and this time it’s not just about his legal battles but also his personal life. Newly released court documents have revealed that the 31-year-old rapper is now a married man while serving time in prison. The revelation comes as Lanez seeks a motion with the Superior Court of Los Angeles to secure his release on bail, appealing his felony conviction and the 10-year sentence handed down for his involvement in the 2020 shooting incident with Megan Thee Stallion.
According to court filings, if Tory Lanez is granted bail, he plans to reside in Los Angeles with his wife, Raina Chassagne, and their six-year-old son Kai. Lanez intends to rent a home close to his family upon his release.
Legal journalist Meghann Cuniff broke the news on Twitter, stating, “From his sentencing hearing engagement announcement to his bail motion wedding announcement, Tory Lanez’s relationship status has advanced rapidly in the last few weeks. His fiancée is now his wife, according to the motion.” The court documents indicate that Chassagne, initially listed as the mother of Lanez’s child, is now officially his wife, although the exact date of their marriage remains undisclosed. Chassagne was present at Lanez’s sentencing hearing earlier this month.
Tory Lanez’s recent sentencing landed him in prison, where he is currently serving a 10-year sentence, having already spent 305 days behind bars. Cuniff also shared that if Lanez is released, he has committed to maintaining sobriety and refraining from any contact with Megan Thee Stallion or her associates. She reported, “Upon release, Mr. Peterson will maintain his sobriety, and have no contact with the victim nor shall he or any of his associates by his direction address her on social media or by other means.” Despite Tory Lanez‘s hopes for a release, securing bail pending an appeal, especially in cases involving violent crimes like first-degree assault with a firearm, is known to be a challenging endeavor.
Legal experts suggest that to obtain bail pending an appeal, there must be a substantial likelihood of prevailing on the appeal, typically requiring a demonstration of errors by the trial judge. Attorney Michale Freedman explained, “So it’s pretty rare for the trial judge to find the defense can make this showing about the same judge’s own rulings, especially after the judge has already denied post-trial motions raising those same arguments.”
Currently, Tory Lanez remains in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles while awaiting transport to state prison, following his arrest on December 23, 2022.
