Roc Nation artist Victory Boyd has filed a lawsuit against Travis Scott, SZA, and Future, claiming the trio’s UTOPIA track “TELEKINESIS” copies her copyrighted song “Like The Way It Sounds.” The lawsuit, also names Cactus Jack, Epic Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and Audemars Piguet as defendants.
According to legal documents obtained by Music Business Worldwide, Victory Boyd asserts that she wrote and recorded a demo of “Like The Way It Sounds” in November 2019, sharing the track with Ye via a voice note. Ye reportedly planned to release a version of her song under titles like “Future Bounce,” “Future Sounds,” or “Ultrasounds” but ultimately did not include it on his 2021 album DONDA. Boyd intended to refine and release the song through her Roc Nation contract but alleges her work was later used without her consent.
The lawsuit claims Scott gained access to the track in a Wyoming recording studio where Ye played it for him. Boyd alleges that “TELEKINESIS” incorporates “substantial and original aspects” of her song, including specific lyrics such as, “I can see the future is looking like we level through the sky, I can’t wait to live in glory in eternal lasting life, won’t you take the wheel and I recline and I sit still – might as well turn up now.” She was credited as a co-writer on the track but contends she was unaware of its release and was only offered an 8% writing credit, which she deems insufficient given the alleged infringement.
Boyd also accuses Audemars Piguet of using the song in a campaign without her approval, despite her prior objections. The lawsuit alleges the luxury brand knew the track was derived from her original work.
