After more than a decade of anticipation, Mac Miller’s lost project Balloonerism has officially arrived. The album, which marks his second posthumous release, offers a raw and introspective glimpse into the late artist’s creative process. With its psychedelic instrumentation and reflective lyrics, Balloonerism stands as one of Miller’s most unique and authentic works.
Recorded between 2013 and 2014, during the time between Watching Movies With The Sound Off and the Faces mixtape, Balloonerism captures Miller in an experimental phase of his career. The album spans 14 tracks and largely features Miller working solo, though he is joined by longtime collaborator SZA on the track “DJ’s Chord Organ” and his musical alter ego, Delusional Thomas, on “Transformations.” The appearance of Delusional Thomas marks the first time this persona has been credited on a studio recording since Miller’s 2013 mixtape under the same name.
In a statement from Miller’s estate, it was revealed that Balloonerism was a deeply significant project to the artist. The estate mentioned that Miller had even commissioned artwork for the album and regularly discussed its release, although GO:OD AM and other albums eventually took priority. With unofficial versions of the album circulating online for years, the estate felt it was important to release the official version to honor Miller’s wishes.
Alongside the album, a companion film directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, who also worked on the music video for Miller’s 2021 track “Colors and Shapes,” has been released. The animated film was shown in select cities ahead of the album’s drop and is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Balloonerism is now available to stream on all digital platforms, offering fans a long-awaited window into Mac Miller’s world during a pivotal moment in his career.
