MGK Blends Boy Band Vibes and Pop Punk Feels in His New Theatrical “Cliché” Video

MGK is dancing with his demons—and a whole lot of backup dancers—in the highly stylized music video for his new single “Cliché.” Leaning more into pop-punk theatrics than his rap roots, the track finds MGK playing the hopeless romantic, singing: “Tell me, would you wait for me? / Baby, I’m a rolling stone.” It’s an emotional yet radio-ready track that sounds like Blink-182 got a makeover from a boy band choreographer.

Directed with the flair of early-2000s TRL-era excess, the “Cliché” video features MGK surrounded by dramatic lighting, slick footwork, and just enough self-awareness to keep things interesting. It’s big, flashy, and more than a little tongue-in-cheek. But beneath the spectacle is a track that’s ultimately about yearning—for connection, for stability, for someone to stick around while he keeps moving like, well, a rolling stone.

That comparison hits harder knowing MGK recently had a surreal real-life run-in with one of his idols: Bob Dylan. In a post on X, he reflected on a full-circle moment, saying, “I met and had a conversation with someone last night that I never thought I’d get the honor to meet all because of a video of me rapping in a music store 10 years ago.” The video Dylan reposted earlier this year, showing MGK rapping at Park Ave CDs in Orlando back in 2016, somehow led to their meeting backstage at the Hollywood Bowl during Dylan and Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour—where MGK even joined in on maracas.

It’s a weirdly poetic twist for the genre-blurring artist who’s built a career out of defying expectations. Whether trading verses or dancing through heartache, “Cliché” shows MGK isn’t afraid to take risks—even if it means leaning into exactly what the title suggests.
