Los Angeles Honors Nipsey Hussle With New Commemorative Metro Station

Los Angeles is paying tribute to one of its most influential figures with a special nod to Nipsey Hussle. From August 15 through August 31, the city’s Hyde Park Metro Station will temporarily be renamed the Nipsey Hussle Station, celebrating what would have been the rapper’s 40th birthday. For those who know LA—or Hussle’s music—this iconic spot sits right at the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson, an area the late artist worked tirelessly to uplift.

As part of the tribute, Metro is also releasing two limited-edition TAP cards featuring Nipsey’s likeness. The first, “Crenshaw & Slauson,” captures the rapper at the intersection he helped revitalize, shot by legendary photographer Jonathan Mannion. The second, “Watts,” shows Nipsey reclining in the backseat of a Metro bus, offering a glimpse of his laid-back, yet impactful presence. Only 12,000 cards will be released, available at select stations and Metro Customer Centers.

These initiatives are part of Metro’s ongoing Metro x Culture program, which connects the agency with Los Angeles’ vibrant cultural landscape. By collaborating with artists, community leaders, and brands, Metro aims to honor local icons while highlighting the city’s creativity and history. Commuters and fans alike can pick up the cards at Hyde Park, Crenshaw, Slauson, Compton, Hollywood/Vine, and Expo/Crenshaw stations. New sign-ups for Metro’s LIFE Program in South Los Angeles will also receive a commemorative card.

This tribute is more than just a renaming—it’s a reflection of Nipsey Hussle’s lasting impact on his community. Through music, entrepreneurship, and grassroots activism, Nipsey left a mark that continues to inspire. By immortalizing him in the city’s transit system, Los Angeles ensures his legacy rides alongside every commuter navigating these streets.
