Timbaland Reflects on Early Advice to Bryson Tiller

Timbaland is revisiting one of the key turning points in Bryson Tiller’s career, reflecting on the moment he advised the Louisville singer to leave his job and pursue music full time.

The legendary producer spoke after comments Tiller made on The New Rory & Mal Podcast, where the R&B star recalled how Timbaland encouraged him early on but later seemed distant. Timbaland clarified the story, saying his advice came from believing in Tiller’s natural talent but not knowing if he was truly prepared for the spotlight.

“I did tell him to quit his job,” Timbaland admitted, noting that he saw potential but questioned whether Tiller wanted to commit fully to life as an artist.

That leap of faith quickly paid off. Bryson Tiller’s 2015 breakout single, “Don’t,” introduced him as a fresh voice in modern R&B, blending rap and melody in a way that helped define the trap-soul sound. The track anchored his debut album T R A P S O U L, which has since been seen as one of the most influential R&B records of the past decade.

Looking back, Timbaland explained that while he believed in Tiller’s ability, he also sensed hesitation in those early days. “At that time, I just saw a talented kid. But I didn’t know if he really wanted to be a full-fledged artist,” he said.

Both men have gone on to cement their places in music history. Tiller has built a loyal fan base and released multiple successful projects, while Timbaland remains one of the most celebrated producers of his generation, known for groundbreaking work with Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, and many more.

This exchange highlights the complicated but crucial role mentors play in shaping young artists, balancing encouragement with honest doubts about what it takes to stay in the spotlight.
