Legendary rapper Busta Rhymes finds himself at the center of controversy just as his latest EP drops. The artist, known for his rapid-fire delivery and energetic performances, was arrested for third-degree assault earlier this week following an altercation in Brooklyn.
According to reports, Busta, 52, became involved in a physical confrontation with his assistant, 50-year-old Dashiel Gables, during a dispute on the morning of January 10. The incident occurred near the intersection of Jay Street and Front Street, where Busta allegedly punched Gables multiple times in the face. Gables was later treated at Woodhull Hospital for swelling on the left side of his face.
Sources indicate that the altercation stemmed from Busta’s frustration over Gables using his phone in the building’s lobby when he was supposed to be working. After the incident, Busta Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor George Smith Jr., turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday. He was issued a desk appearance ticket for charges including misdemeanor assault, attempted assault, and harassment.
Despite the legal setback, Busta’s music continues to make waves. His new EP, Dragon Season… The Awakening, was released today, featuring six tracks, including a collaboration with YG Marley on the closing song, “Treasure & Gold.” The project showcases Busta’s signature gravelly voice and distinctive style, with energetic beats that keep the momentum going. However, some fans note that the sound feels more traditional compared to his past experimental work. The EP also includes a sequel to his 1998 hit “Do The Bus A Bus,” blending new wave funk with a more contemporary, danceable vibe.
As Busta Rhymes navigates both his legal issues and musical career, the release of Dragon Season… The Awakening signals his continued presence in the rap scene, even as his personal life faces scrutiny.
